Routes to Reading Little Readers Launch Event

June 27, 2014 · by munchiesandmunchkins · Leave a Comment

We have been invited to an event in Bristol tomorrow. We can’t attend but it’s such a fabulous event that I want to share the details with you so that you can go if you are in any way local.

20140627-224720-82040128.jpg

Reading to children is so important. Each day we read to and with Izzy, sometimes she mimics what we say or repeats from memory and sometimes she will make up her own stories. It’s fuelling her creativity. Teaching her about different topics. Introducing her to new worlds. I urge you to start reading with your little ones if you don’t already do so.

See the timetable below for more info on what’s happening when:

One Day At A Time – Breastfeeding

June 27, 2014 · by munchiesandmunchkins · Leave a Comment

Yesterday Chloe had her 6 month check up with our local health visitor. Technically she’s over 7 months but this is when our appointment was given. My HV once again expressed genuine surprise at me still breastfeeding. Apparently in my local area of Wales it’s very unusual for women to breastfeed past 6 months. She asked when I was thinking about stopping.

I don’t know.

A month ago I would have said soon. But now I don’t know. There are days when I get seriously frustrated at being so restricted. I can’t leave Chloe for very long and I can’t drink more than a glass of wine. I can’t drink caffeine as she doesn’t cope with it very well. I watch what I eat, I always worry that I’m not drinking or eating the right things for her. So why am I still doing it?

Because I can.

Izzy was a really difficult feeder and I didn’t get an awful lot of support from health care professionals to rectify that, by 6 months she had more or less decided she didn’t want my boobs anymore. So I expressed for another month or two and then reluctantly I stopped.

When Chloe was born one of my first concerns was will she feed? And she did. Immediately. She hasn’t stopped for breath much since.

She still feeds at least two- three times a night and whereas in the day her feeds are short n sweet her nighttime feeds are longer.. harder.

I have expressed milk and we are trying again soon to get her to feed with a new bottle as I feel that if I have that option I will carry on longer again.

Breastfeeding is hard. I don’t like it sometimes. I love it most of the time.

20140627-215204-78724906.jpg

My nipples are sore and get bitten daily. Chloe has four teeth, two top front and two bottom front – ouch.

I love when I feed her and she reaches up to smooth my face or hold my hand.

Some days I want to cry out with the frustration of never being alone. Other days I want to cry at the thought of this short time in our lives ending.

I’m not putting a date or time or when I will stop breastfeeding. I guess one day I will just decide enough is enough. Or Chloe will decide for me. I hope it’s not soon.

Medela have released a graphic explaining and answering some of the common breastfeeding questions. The one boob or both caught my eye as Chloe was always a one boob girl but now she’s both every single time.

Market Deli Kitchen Delights – Review.

June 27, 2014 · by munchiesandmunchkins · Leave a Comment

A little while ago I received an invite to go to a foodie event. It was to be held in London, hosted by Market Deli – a new range of snacks from Walkers and there would be refreshments, grown up company and we would get to watch the very lovely Tom Aiken cook right in front of us. This sounded more than perfect to me and just happened to be right at the beginning of a visit to stay with family in Kent so I was close by which was a bonus.

As always plans don’t always go the way you want them to and despite leaving home a whopping 7 hours before I needed to be there we got stuck right behind a car accident and instead of spending the evening in a swanky London venue I spent it on the M25. Fun.

Luckily I was still sent a goodie bag of treats to enjoy and I turned a little green with envy checking out fellow bloggers photos of the night.

Here are some pics for you to get an idea of what happened:

20140627-140452-50692589.jpg

20140627-140450-50690228.jpg

Looks good right?

And now a little bit of info about Market Deli:

This summer sees the launch of Market Deli, the exciting new range of premium snacks from the makers of Walkers crisps. The range – which has been inspired by authentic produce found in delicatessens – aims to bring home the great variety of flavours as found across Europe and the UK.

Available nationwide from 23rd June, the Market Deli range will feature pita chips and tortilla chips, in addition to the classic potato chip – providing even more variety for those with a passion for food.

The Market Deli range comes in eight mouth-watering flavours – with each flavour featuring irresistible real ingredients such as Mature Cheddar from Cornwall to aged Aceto Balsamico di Modena PGI and delicious Sundried Tomatoes from the Manisa region in Turkey.

Each of the flavour combinations and the ingredients used to create the new products, have been selected and crafted by food experts to ensure a truly indulgent and immersive taste experience, making Market Deli the perfect addition to an evening in with a partner and a drink.

And what do we think?

I really like crisps. Who doesn’t? I’m definitely more of a posh crisp fan. I love trying new and different flavours and these really are right up my street. They kind of blew my diet out of the water as they were too good to stop at one or two but I’m not complaining.

My favourite is the Anglesey sea salt with black pepper.. They are awesome on their own or dipped in little houmous.

20140627-142704-52024623.jpg

20140627-142703-52023670.jpg

I really want to try the roasted garlic with herbs next… Must go shopping.

* I was provided with these products for the purpose of this review and compensated for my time.

A Simple Soup

June 27, 2014 · by munchiesandmunchkins · Leave a Comment

With most relationships you have ups and downs and periods of time where you just take the other party for granted. That’s how I feel about my Vitamix.

When I first won it I was over the moon and I had great ideas for what I would make. That first month I made lots and lots of amazing dishes. After the honeymoon period I settled into just ‘using’ my Vitamix. I threw veggies in when I was too lazy to dice and grate. I used it to make my milk all foamy when I wanted an indulgent hot choc and also to make the odd smoothie.

The last few months I have once again become enamoured with it. I’ve made lots of lovely delights. Such as salted caramel sauce and pesto.

Today I just made a simple soup. Simple in the ingredients, not so on taste. It was delicious and both myself, toddler and OH thoroughly enjoyed. It was easy, so easy in fact I feel daft sharing the recipe but here you go.

My Simple Soup

You will need:

1 carrot
1/2 a red onion
A bunch of fresh Basil
1 carton of chopped tomatoes
500ml of vegetable stock
1 squirt of tomato purée – I used Cirio
Seasoning – sea salt and black pepper

20140625-193005-70205759.jpg

If you are using a Vitamix you can throw it all in, turn it up to the highest point and leave for 4-5 minutes until hot.

20140625-193045-70245622.jpg

If making in a saucepan, first sauté the diced onion and diced carrot in a pan until soft before adding all other ingredients and warming through. Then use a hand blender (carefully) to purée it.

It can be served as just a soup or over pasta or chicken or in my toddlers case with sliced sausage and hunks of bread.

20140625-193113-70273014.jpg

20140625-193112-70272534.jpg

I should also point out that this is a really budget friendly recipe 🙂

Enjoy.

Something About Nothing – June

June 26, 2014 · by munchiesandmunchkins · Leave a Comment

I have a rather long list of potential blog post subjects, things I WANT to talk about, recipes, updates about the kids, weaning, breastfeeding as well as reviews etc etc. Sometimes I just want to write about nothing. And everything. About me. About my little world where I live with my family. About the bigger world in which we all live in. A kind of in my head update if you will.

I’m 8 months into my maternity leave. Chloe is 7 months old. Izzy is nearly 3 years old.. I’m 31. How did any of that seem to happen in the blink of an eye?

I still feel (and act sometimes) as though I’m in my early twenties. I often sit and wonder at how strange it still feels that I’m responsible for TWO children. It doesn’t always feel real if I’m honest.

Am I happy? Yes. Mostly I’m happy. I do find being a mother hard. Everyone knows it’s not an easy role. Being a mum of two is a bigger challenge that I expected but I wouldn’t change it. I love being a parent. Life is wonderfully weird and full of smiles, tears, sticky hands and dirty nappies.

I’m starting to look at what I want to do with my life. Career wise. I’m a little older than most people making these kind of decisions but I know I’m not happy with my office job anymore. It’s a good, steady, responsible job so I won’t be making any rash choices but it means nothing to me and you only get to live your life once.. Unless you are a cat.

I want to work somehow within social media and food. I love both and I feel I could be good at that kind of work. It’s rather vague I know but I have some things in the pipeline which I’m very excited about. For now the aim is to return to work in December part time but I am really positive about being able to work freelance and hoping that I won’t be back there for too long. Sorry boss.

I’ve recently spent some time in London and whilst I thoroughly enjoyed the events I attended and the people I was able to enjoy time with I can say it’s made me even happier to live where I live. Our life here is pretty laid back and although I occasionally crave the excitement and non stop lifestyle of a big city I know where I belong. I live in Wales by the way. Yes there are lots of sheep, yes we talk like we are singing and frequently our sentences make no sense to non Welshies.

A lot has changed in the blogging world since I started writing this blog. There are more bloggers, more opportunities and people are more aware of blogging as a whole. I love writing it, I love you all for reading it. I love what I feel I’ve achieved and the people I have met and friends I have made as result of it.

To finish up I want to share a photo of strawberries growing in my garden. Actual strawberries in my actual garden. Could I be more domesticated?

20140626-221014-79814850.jpg

So there you go. A rather random post today 🙂

Pimms With A Twist

June 26, 2014 · by munchiesandmunchkins · 1 Comment

I used to be a bit of a Pimms addict. Not in an I’m an alcoholic sense but every time I went out for a drink or had drinks at home it was my beverage of choice. Light, summery, full of fruit – it’s practically heathy right?

Then I got pregnant and spent a lot of time trying to find a mocktail version which I did – yay and in stepped Schweppes summer punch. After my last pregnancy I went off it completely for about 6 months and it’s only recently that I have fancied it again but I’m bored of the same old Pimms so I replaced the strawberries with watermelon, the mint with basil and the plain old lemonade mixer with a gorgeous rose lemonade ( from Fentimans ) and it’s more than a little bit epic. I whizzed it up in the Vitamix but a normal blender which is able to crush ice will do.

Pimms With A Twist

You will need:

Pimms ( about 125ml or 1 cup)
1&1/2 Cups of watermelon just roughly chopped
1 small bunch of basil
1 tray of ice
2 bottles of Fentimans Rose Lemonade

20140625-210431-75871447.jpg

20140625-210501-75901041.jpg

Put your Pimms, watermelon, basil and ice into your Vitamix or blender and blend until smooth.

20140625-210501-75901458.jpg

20140625-210502-75902347.jpg

Pour into a glass and fill to halfway – it will look quite foamy. Top up with rose lemonade and garnish however you like – a basil leaf perhaps? Enjoy straight away or leave until the foamy drink settles into something so delicious…you won’t stop at one.

20140625-210655-76015913.jpg

Please excuse the foamy look of the drink. I managed to delete the pic I took of it once it had settled.

This may replace my regular Pimms forever more. Enjoy.

Degustabox May – Review

June 25, 2014 · by munchiesandmunchkins · 1 Comment

Where does the time go? How is it nearly July? It feels as though the May Degustabox just arrived when it was actually over 4 weeks ago. Sorry for the delay with the review but it’s been such a chaotic month that I’ve only just got round to trying the products and well if it wouldn’t be much of a review without that would it?

So here we go..

20140625-215531-78931009.jpg

20140625-215531-78931490.jpg

Another fantastic box! Every time it arrives I feel as though I am waiting to be disappointed as I’ve never been a fan of subscription boxes but they truly are brilliant. Every month has something new for me. Every month it makes me try out new recipes. I can’t recommend it enough.

Ooh and do you want to save £3.00 on your box? Use code: KT9HI 🙂

This is what was in the box:

First up Cirio products – haven’t yet used the passata but the purée has a great flavour.

Then Hornsby ciders – we LOVED these. Delicious. Will definitely be buying soon.

20140625-222348-80628489.jpg

20140625-222345-80625741.jpg

RAW energy chewing gum – I couldn’t try this as I’m breastfeeding so they are in the car for when my OH gets tired. They do smell like red bull 😉

Cawston Press – this is the second flavour I’ve tried and liked. The rhubarb is definitely my favourite though.

20140625-223416-81256270.jpg

20140625-223507-81307642.jpg

Next up is Garofalo pasta – this is a new brand to me and we eat tons of pasta here. It’s really good and I will keep an eye out for it in my local stores.

Dr Oetker Cake Release Spray – I use a lot of Dr Oetker products and I was eager to see if this worked and yay it’s brilliant. I don’t use baking parchment anymore as it’s so effective.

20140625-222949-80989660.jpg

20140625-222952-80992284.jpg

Finn Crisp Rye Sourdough Crispbreads – these were really unusual and at first I wasn’t sure I liked them but I do, I do. My mum loved them too so I shared.

20140625-223918-81558589.jpg

Taylor’s Blackberry and Elderflower herbal tea– I don’t drink much herbal tea SO I used these to make tea loaf and it’s so good I’ve made it twice since. It smells totally delicious when brewed. Recipe to follow tomorrow.

20140625-224354-81834152.jpg

Kettle Sweet Potato Oven baked crisps – I’ve seen that some people don’t like that these but I thought they were really tasty, I am quite a fan of veggie crisps though so perhaps that’s why.

20140625-225027-82227000.jpg

Finally Elizabeth Shaws dark chocolate cocoa crunch flutes – these were I think my favourite part of the box. I’ve rationed then out and because they are such an intense hit of chocolate you don’t actually need to eat much in one go. Will have to buy more soon.

20140625-225400-82440446.jpg

Check out the Degustabox website for more info and keep an eye on my blog for two recipes inspired by the products in the May Box.

Homemade Fruity Surprise Lollies

June 25, 2014 · by munchiesandmunchkins · 2 Comments

There must a be a million different recipes for homemade lollies or ice pops on the internet but I’m still surprised when I talk to friends and family at just how many people have never tried DIY lollies.

The perks:

* You know what’s gone into it. So no nasties, colourings etc etc.

* You can use up fruits, juices or yoghurts which would otherwise be thrown out.

* They are cheaper. For the reason above. I never buy ingredients to specifically make them I just use leftovers.

These ones were created out of a new love of Izzys for cherries and to use up yoghurts in the fridge which were very close to going out of date.

You will need:

Flavoured yoghurt – I used Asda smart price fromage frais which cost about 44p for 6.
Cherries – I used Picota cherries which I halved and stoned firs.
Lolly Moulds

Depending on the size of your moulds layer with yoghurt and cherries then stick in a spoon and give it a swirl. You don’t want too many cherries in each one. My mould which is a standard lolly size took 1.5 yoghurt pots per lolly and about 8 cherry halves. Freeze until solid. I left overnight.

Then give to an extremely grateful child or eat them yourself. They taste surprisingly indulgent and look fab.

The two middle ones are yoghurt ones. The one on the far left is a frozen orange aero and the one on far right is leftover smoothie.

Hotel Chocolat Beer, Gin & Cocktails – Review

June 25, 2014 · by munchiesandmunchkins · Leave a Comment

You would be forgiven for thinking that Hotel Chocolat just make chocolates.

That’s definitely not the case. They also do a pretty amazing selection of oils, pestos, vinegars and boooooze.

I was recently sent some of their cocoa beer, cocoa gin and mojito chocs to sample and review…it’s a hard job but someone’s got to do it ..right?

20140624-153813-56293912.jpg

20140624-153814-56294445.jpg

So let’s start with the Gin ..just because that’s a very good place to start.

What do Hotel Chocolat have to say about it?

A classically cool and crisp English dry gin infused with the flavours of our Rabot Estate in Saint Lucia – lemon zests, juniper, coriander, mineola and angelica, with peppery notes of roasted cocoa shells and the rich creaminess of crushed macadamia nuts.

And what did we think?

For me the overriding flavour was citrus when mixed with the tonic water. This is not a bad thing as I love citrus flavours. I found that I could taste more cocoa when I tasted it neat. We both enjoyed and it was fresh and crisp.

Next onto the chocolates.. Mojito chocolates to be precise.

These are divine. I’ve had liqueurs before and flavoured chocolates plenty of times but these are just perfect. They taste so rum like that it almost feels like you are having a very sweet, indulgent drink with a bite of delightful chocolate. So so good.

20140624-213510-77710873.jpg

Next up is the beer..

What do Hotel Chocolat have to say about it?

Our distinctive, English, small-batch beer, brewed with traditional Fuggles hops and the warming flavour of cocoa shells to create a complex, rounded ale of real character, with pleasing savoury bitterness and notes of tobacco, cocoa and coffee. Our cocoa shells are left over from making chocolate, but they’re just too good to throw away

And what do we think?

I’m not much of a beer drinker so I totally left this up to Andrew and he really enjoyed. He has just recently discovered the joys of coffee and said he definitely picked up the coffee and cocoa notes which made it a little bit different to a normal bottle of beer.

So overall a very pleasant trio of goodies. Not just chocolate in the Hotel Chocolat selection.

Reasons To Visit The BBC Good Food Show. 11-20

June 24, 2014 · by munchiesandmunchkins · 1 Comment

Sorry for the delay in writing the second part of my series about the BBC Good Food Show bit I’ve just returned from a week away in Kent and various parts of London. It’s been a chaotic month but the BBC Good Food show was definitely a major highlight. I am already counting down the months until the winter shows.

Without further ado let’s dive into reasons 11-20 of why you should visit the BBC GFS.

11. There is a good chance you will meet a celeb chef. If you are a little bit in love Mary Berry .. or the silver fox aka Paul Hollywood then your dreams could come true:

20140624-120413-43453155.jpg

12. You get to try before you buy. On pretty much anything. There are samples galore and it’s rude to say no so maybe skip breakfast before you go – ooh that rhymed.

13. Even more cooking demos. It’s not just the Supertheatre you need to visit to see your favourite chefs in action but also the Belling Live and Summer kitchen too. Chefs this year included: Greg Wallace, Lisa Faulkner and Shelina Permaloo amongst others.

14. You will see products you have never heard of before.. Like strawberry mint from Urban Herbs or honey beer from Hiver. This could also be your only chance to buy them, for example Urban Herbs only do collection rather than delivery so if you don’t live to near them then the Good Food Show is your only place to stock up ..and you need Urban Herbs in your life.

15. Gadgets galore. You know all those must have gadgets you just NEED..well you can see them in action and try dishes that have been created my chefs demoing them. Vitamix, Braun, Morphy Richards and Kenwood are just a few of the brands at the show. I heart my Vitamix.

16. Cocktails at Home Masterclass – a new addition to the show and a very exciting one. Learn how to make three cocktails under the watchful tutoring of cocktail gurus Tom Soden & Frankie Campopiano and learn all about essential cocktail kit and ingredients.

17. MasterChef Street Food visited the BBC Good Food Show Summer with their wonderfully converted double-decker Routemaster bus, with delicious street food cooked by MasterChef Champion Mat Follas (Champion 2009) and Jackie Kearney (Finalist 2011).
Dishes included a Smoky Chicken Burger, Singapore Scallops (Queenie scallops and Crab Bisque with Rice Noodles), Banh Mi Buddha Sandwich, and two delicious ice creams: Lavender & Lemon and Walnut & Miso.

18. Back to the celeb chef thing. If you are a cookbook addict ( like me ) you can get your cookbook fix and even get them signed by numerous chefs at signing sessions throughout the day. Here is Michel Roux Jr at a show last year:

20140624-120941-43781726.jpg

19. Gifts. You can buy some really lovely presents at the show. Things that people are not always able to buy in the shops. Stock up!

20. Wine tasting Masterclass hosted by Sue Atkins – what a way to end up my 20 reasons to go. Wine. I don’t really need to go into much detail do I?

New to the selection of BBC Good Food shows is the Cakes and Bakes show which will be held in London this October. Find out more here: www.bbcgoodfoodbakesandcakesshow.com Mary Berry will be appearing every day and as we are now good friends* ( May be a slight exaggeration) then I urge you to go see her.
