What do you love?
It’s a simple question.. What do you love? I don’t mean the obvious family, friends etc. I mean your interests, hobbies or maybe just cake.
For me I love cooking .. and books. I love other things too such as festivals, blogging, music, travelling, films and much more but really if I had to narrow it down to just two it would be cooking and books.
The love of books for me started extremely early. I was nicknamed bookworm ( how cool ) by my family and I was caught reading my ( 10yrs older ) sisters copy of A Colour Purple at the tender age of 8. Oops – I may have got into trouble for that one. I literally would read anything I could get my hands on. These days I’m slightly picker about what I read but my taste is pretty varied and I’ll give most genres a whirl ( aside from extreme horror ) but you know what I read most these days… Cookery books! I don’t just read them for recipes, I read them as I would a normal book and ah I do love finding an old classic in my local charity shop.
My latest find:
10p from my local charity shop and written by the queen of cakes Mary Berry
I do love that this book has written in some of the recipes the sentence If you have a freezer. Ha.
My love of cookery books is starting to take over my tiny kitchen.
My lovely man put a book shelf up to contain some…
I have some tucked away here..
And I haven’t even found a place for these ones yet
I *may* also have a few on my Kindle. I want more. It’s an addiction but its not a bad one really. Don’t ask me to choose a favourite as I just couldn’t.
As much as I love the amazing recipe websites that have popped up recently and also I mostly like to make up my own recipes these days I couldn’t give these books away .. Something very special about thinking of the many times a book could have been used to help create that special meal. I heart my books.
Silent Sunday
Spending Women’s day with Women #blogsummit
I spent today – International Women’s Day with some pretty fabulous bloggers – mainly women with the exception of Tom Arber ( photographer and guest speaker).
Having never attended a blog summit/blog camp/bloggers conference I didn’t know what to expect and I imagine I was not alone in being slightly apprehensive..possibly even a little scared ( yes I am a wimp). Thankfully it was a really lovely day learning lots of new ( very useful) blogging tips. I know what SEO means now: search engine optimisation don’t ya know. I know that Google can be pretty evil and will sometimes inspect my blog with a fine toothcomb. I know how to avoid incurring Googles wrath (Thanks to Tom at Fresh Egg) I know to how to take better photos thanks to the very lovely Becky & Tom of the amazing Ar Blog.
I learnt about how to work with charities and the good my blog could possibly do thanks to Annie ( Mammasaurus) – possibly the only blogger we all instantly recognised.. She’s friends with Davina and Jonathan Ross and part of the famous #teamhonk and I learnt a million useful tips from Cathy of Nurturestore – my Pinterest is getting an overhaul and Facebook well I may just venture back into your murky waters. I also met founder of Tots100 Sally Whittle and lots of lovely twitter friends. In fact it was kind of like a game of guess who trying to match the twitter name to the person.
I will be signing up with Blinx and Tots100 ads shortly to help them raise money for charity via advertising as a result of some inspiring chatter today – interesting times for us parent bloggers
Sometimes a group of women can be intimidating but for once I can honestly say I didn’t really worry about how I looked or if my blog stats were higher than whoever I chatted to or how many slots above me they were in the Tots100 chart. I just enjoyed the characters I met and being part of such a supportive community. We have been reminded lately of just how amazing the blogger network can be and today was yet another example of that. Thanks to all at Tots100 who made it such an interesting day, to Fresh Egg, Blinx and the guest speakers.
Ooh I almost forgot there was free Actimel! Lots of it. The coconut flavour is divine and I’m not being paid to tell you that 😉
Here is a fellow blogger @optforoptimism with her Actimel stash:
I forgot to take any other pics. I was engrossed 😀
The 50 breads challenge 3,4 & 5
I do apologise for the delay in updating you on my Breads challenge but I have still been baking I promise!
I have actually completed a further 3 bakes in my 50 breads challenge but I am still a long way from my target..oops better get my skates on.
Recipe No.3 was a basic white loaf which I somehow neglected to take a photo of .. Sorry! It was good and I’m surprised that I’ve never tried a plain loaf before. Izzy loved it too. The recipe was from Paul Hollywoods How to Bake book.
Recipe No.4 was a variation on a flatbread recipe that I tried a while back which you can read about hereThe simple addition of Sichuan peppercorns (crushed) and chilli&garlic rapeseed oil made this a super tasty bake. Yum.
They are meant to look rather blackened don’t you know?
Recipe No.5 was Foccacia. I will almost certainly be repeating this recipe within the next fortnight. So so so so good. The recipe I used was from my River Cottage book and you can actually find it on the River Cottage site here
I used my spiced salt ( seasalt, chilli flakes and star anise) along with a chilli and garlic rapeseed oil in my dough and chopped fresh rosemary on top. It was my first attempt and I absolutely loved it.

Teething necklace giveaway for Mother’s Day – Competition
Another competition for you lovely mummies/mammies in time for Mother’s Day.
Win a gorgeous pepper raindrop pendant necklace from Gumigem!
The creator of Gumigem is Jenny McLaughlan who came up with the idea while on maternity leave with her second child in early 2010. Jenny’s son inspired her to start the company, as he was a nightmare during teething, biting everything in sight! She used to tie and strap teethers to herself until the light bulb moment hit her and she decided to create a teether into a stylish piece of jewellery? Gumigem was born!
The jewellery is made from silicone (like what you would find a dummy teat, teething toy or baby spoon to be made of), so is soft and flexible. It is BPA, PVC, Lead, Latex and Phthalate free, can withstand high temperatures and be easily washed in hot water or placed in the dishwasher. The necklaces come on a long cord, so there is plenty of reach for baby, and for extra comfort and safety, each necklace has a breakaway clasp.
I wish I’d known about these when Izzy was a little smaller!

Funky Mothers Day bibs from Funky Giraffe – competition
I have a cute little competition here for my lovely readers. A set of 3 bibs from Funky Giraffe designed especially for Mothers Day.
Funky Giraffe was set up in 2009 by Yasmin Drury, having worked for a major retailer she was all too aware of the cost of production and the massive mark up charged by companies. As a mum herself, she knew what she wanted for her son and set out to produce funky designs at a reasonable price.
Funky Giraffe only use fabric made to OEKO-TEX standard 100 for baby garments. They print their own items and only use water based inks, (while solvent based inks are legal, they come in big tins marked with a big X and Harmful, as bibs get chewed this did not seem right). The company only use inks that are completely non toxic.

A star in the sky
Over the last few weeks I’ve been torn as to whether to write a post on this or not. To post felt a little rude, after all I never knew the family ( at least not outside the twitter and blogging world) and it was not my grief to be grieving.. That sentence probably makes no sense.
But the fact is I have been grieving, as have so many of you. For a beautiful child who we never met and for a family we all want to to hug and make everything a little better. I’ve seen Twitter become even more of a community .. I’ve read poems and songs which have both tears and happiness bursting from them. I’ve read thoughts and blog posts from an inspiring woman who makes me want to be a better mother. Who despite the mountain of grief she is dealing with continues to think of others and create happy memories for her young twins.
To not post in the end felt worse. I feel it only right to acknowledge what happened and to help raise awareness.
I have become wary, I hold my child that little tighter and I am aware of any possible danger. At night the reassuring flashing light on her monitor is the only reason I get sleep. From what I have read all of you parents who know of this tragedy have felt the same.
This terrible thing and it truly is terrible has only one benefit. We are now more aware of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) and there are so many websites giving information. A lot of people ( me included) thought that the risk ends at 6 months. This is not the case. If you are a parent or expectant parent read up on it. Don’t let it spoil your newborn time but be aware.
We are dependant on our baby monitor ( Tommee Tippee sensor one ) it is the best purchase we have made for a baby product. I almost stopped using it at 12 months thinking that there was no need but the peace of mind it gives me is worth any annoying noise or flashing light a million times over.
There is nothing left to say except for the family – my thoughts are always with you. You cross my mind more times than you can imagine. For MM you will always be the brightest star in the sky.

Countdown to Camp Bestival #1
It’s that time of year again when I am officially allowed to start getting excited about Festival Season! Wooop.
It’s just 153 days until Camp Bestival. That’s less than 5 months (just) and there is so much to get excited over.
This is the first in a series of posts I’m going to write about all the amazing things that CB 2013 has to offer and well if you haven’t bought tickets by May I’ll be shocked.
Last year we only found out we were going about 2 weeks before we went and here is what we were most looking forward to then : 2012 Preview
It was far better than we could even imagine and I really do intend to go every year for a LONG
time to come.
Anyway here is a very quick summary of what we are looking forward to the most so far – things are still being announced so this list will get longer I’m sure. In no particular order:
The Levellers – I loved the Levellers when I was younger so really excited to see/hear them live.
Mr Tumble – We are all very excited to see Mr T this year. He was fab last year but Izzy was too young to really get it but fast forward to now and he is her hero so I’m excited to see her face light up when he appears on stage.. And if she gets to actually meet him ..well I don’t know who would be happier… Because as we all know Mr Tumble is funnyyyyyyyyy.
Dick n Dom – these guys were hilarious last year so will be fun to see them again.
Barry Ashworth ( DubPistols ) we have seen Barry perform with Dub Pistols 4 times now in different festivals and its always an amazing show.
Howard Marks – the bedtime story was one of the highlights for us last year and we will definitely be lounging in the grass to hear this years Howard take on a classic. Last year was Jack and the beanstalk – told in a way I’d certainly never heard it before.
Music we want to listen to : Gabrielle Aplin, Richard Hawley, The Cuban Brothers and many many more.
What we want to do:
The Wall of Death – we watched it twice last year and these super talented and crazily brave ( or just crazy ) group of stunt riders were fascinating. So glad it’s back this year.
Dance Space: excited to see this new feature of CB which you can read more about here
Visit the free sports park
Check out the pantomime
Go to the Young British Foodies tent – ah last year this place was heaven to me. The very best of British food in one tent with supremely tasty cocktails to wash it down with. Yum.
Visit the WI cake & tea tent. Last year it was too busy every time but I’m determined to get in early this time.
Eat lots of proper festival food: last year we indulged in Burritos from Luardos, Ribs from the famous Ribman and Paella as well as Churros.. Ice cream and of course Pimms.
If you want to read about last year you can do so here
A lot of people on twitter ask me if its easy to take a baby to Camp Bestival and it really is. Izzy was 9 months at last years CB and we all had a fab time. It’s a festival for all ages. If you have any questions at all or any concerns that I can help with please write them in the comments box and I will answer them all in my next post.
My next post will focus on what to take, all of the new things that feature at this years festival and how to enjoy yourselves with a baby at a festival.
Until next time…
If you want to buy tickets you can do so here:Tickets
* Camp Bestival have given me tickets for this years festival and in return I will be writing a series of posts on the festival. All views are my own.. Or Izzys 🙂
Mr Tumble is Funnyyyyyyy
Izzy is 18 months old. I know. Shocking. The time really has flown and each day I see more and more of the person my baby toddler is becoming. Each day provides me with both the opportunity to tear my hair out and cry with laughter at different things she does or the funny gobbledygook language she can spout along with her quite remarkable collection of funny faces. It’s a special time and although I miss my baby – I adore my little girl.
I last blogged about Izzy and what she does/doesn’t do about 4 months ago which you can read here and so much has changed.
Sleep
This is the big one, the topic every parent dreads but at the same time can’t wait to discuss. The question: Does he/she sleep though the night? The answer : thankfully still improving! We now get approximately 12-13 hours straight through each night ( well maybe 6 out of 7 nights) with the occasional 6am wake up for milk. It feels marvellous to have our evenings back although most of its is spent washing, cleaning, cooking or organising but it just improves day to day life when you get a full nights rest. I know things can change and its taken us a LONG time to get here.
Fellow mum/dad tweeters are often asking for sleep tips/bedtime routines and I rarely offer advice as after all it took us so long to get to a good place that I’m no expert but then you know what maybe I am – after all it took a long time – yes but we got there. We figured out ( finally) what worked and put it into practise so I won’t offer advice as such but I will tell you what we do.
Bedtime:
About 6pm Izzy has her supper ( unsweetened porridge or toast) and brushes her teeth, then we watch In the Night Garden while she cuddles her snuggly ( a pink fleecy square of blanket with teddy attached which she has had since birth) she is also allowed her dummy. She is only allowed her dummy to sleep ( has been this way since 6 months old) so she knows its time for bed. We then cuddle or read and normally these days she will go to stand by the door ready to go up to bed as she is so tired. I take her milk up with me then we have a quick cuddle before we put her in the cot and she takes her milk. I close the door and leave her to it. She normally drinks her milk them drops off to sleep. Occasionally she will stir after 10 mins as she wants her dummy but mostly from that point she will sleep till morning.
I think having a routine is a great idea although we aren’t rigid as we like to go away and need Izzy to be flexible. Having sleep cues such as her snuggly which she doesn’t play with during the day make her realise its bedtime and normally she is more than ready for her bed by 7pm. Lately she has started standing by the door to the stairs waiting for us to take her up and last night she very adorably pointed at the door and said all in one go “Gotobed” yes she said a 3 word sentence. First one ever and probably a fluke but ahhh so sweet.
Food
Izzy still has a great appetite. She will eat all day long if you let her and is very open to trying new things – I hope I have a miniature foodie.
An average day looks like this:
Breakfast : Fresh fruit or a fruit pot along with toast ( sometimes with peanut butter – which she loves ) and water ( we still don’t give juice as she loves water )
Mid morning : an Organix or Plum biscuit or some cheese or similar snacks
After nap lunch : this varies a lot but could be a mini chicken roast dinner, ravioli, gnocchi, lasagne or occasionally a buffet of crudités, meats and cheese – this is something she loves and if you add a little houmous she’s in heaven. Normally followed by a yoghurt and water.
Mid afternoon- fruit or a biscuit or carrot/peppers
Tea time: again this varies but scrambled eggs, frittata and cheese on toast go down well as she’s already had her main meal.
Just before bed:
Porridge – we use ready oats from Asda. They are cheap and she eats them plain mixed with full fat milk. Occasionally I add some cinnamon but she’s quite happy eating it plain.
Food she loves:
Any raw fresh veg
Fruit
Organix ginger biscuits
Homemade bread
Eggs
Peanut butter
A roast dinner with gravy
Gnocchi
Mummy’s comforting chicken casserole
Food she hates:
I am really struggling to think of anything although occasionally the texture of meat annoys her and she did not enjoy tinned macaroni cheese last week but I tasted it too and I don’t blame her.
Toys
At the moment Izzy loves throwing her ball about. On a recent breaks she loved the footballs in the play area so we bought her a 99p light plastic ball in Tesco and she just loves playing that with me and her Dad. She loves a felt In the Night Garden set that my mum found in a charity shop last year and will play with it for agessss. She is fascinated with blocks and stacking cups and is getting good at making higher towers – she also delights in pushing them over so they come crashing down around her. She can solo play really well but also loves interaction with us and her cousins. Books are still firm favourites which definitely pleases me as I’m such a bookworm. Right now we are enjoying Dr Seuss Oh the Places we’ll go and The Tombliboos waving game.
TV
I’m prepared for some of you to judge me when I tell you my daughter adores the telly. We don’t let her watch it all day long but on days when I have been ill or she has been then Cbeebies has certainly helped. Her favourite programmes don’t change much, In the Night Garden is still our nightly viewing and helps to get her sleepy. She loves Get Well Soon.. Especially Dr Ranj but right now the biggest smiles are for the main man Justin. If you have a child then you know Justin. If you don’t have a child then you probably know Justin. The man is everywhere. Justin’s house, Gigglebiz ( my fave ) and Something Special (Izzy’s fave). Her face lights up when she sees him. I don’t actually care if you judge me on this as Mr Tumble is a star, a teacher and well just generally pretty awesome. Just from watching SS Izzy has learnt some Makaton, she learnt the sentence “Over there” and can use it accurately so it’s clear she understands what it means. My heart melts a little when I ask her where is Daddy and she will point to him and say “over there” ahhhhhhhhh. She will also finish my sentence when I say Mr Tumble is…Funny! Or Mr Tumble makes Izzy…laugh.
If we let her she would watch it for hours. But we don’t. She gets some tv time, then play time, food time and book time. We don’t let her demand it although she occasionally points to it when it’s off but we ignore that and she doesn’t whine.
Talking
I try not to worry about how much Izzy can say, some days she says very little and other day she doesn’t shut up. Perhaps she has the perfect mix of her parents 😉 favourite words are Yes, Mam, Dad, Ta, Nana, Gone,Hiya, Upsy Daisy and occasionally No! Ha she also loves to make a big ahh noise when hugging or kissing and will also tap your back during a cuddle which is mega cute. She gets confused with hi and bye and still gets baffled by voices on the phone. On days when she is quieter she will always shock us by saying a two word sentence such as Gone Sam ( talking about her cousin leaving the room ) or last night we had Go to Bed. I think when she masters some more words we are going to have a funny little girl.
The other stuff
She wears mostly 18-24m clothes but lots of 2-3 too. She has hardly any baby fat left but she is so tall-Daddy’s girl.
She loves to give kissed through the gate to the kitchen or join in if me and her dad are having a cuddle – we call it the Izzy sandwich and she finds it hilarious.
She adores both sets of grandparents and is so sociable and confident I wonder where she came from.
After walking for over 9 months she can now run pretty fast which is fun. Not.
She can be a stubborn little minx and loves to run away with her hands tucked behind her with whatever object she has stolen hidden behind her.
She can now open doors and climb EVERYWHERE!
When I come home from work she is always waiting by the window with her Dad – her face lights up and I get lots of window kisses:
I still can’t believe she went from this:
To this:
To this:
I can’t imagine my life without her. My wonderful girl.
