Pregnancy Essentials
There are some things you NEED in pregnancy..chocolate and cake being just two of these things.
Here is my list ( which I will probably update sporadically) of the products/services etc that I feel are my essentials. So in no particular order:
1. Comfy bras – this really is a must. Your boobs will hurt. A lot. They will grow and feel tender to the point where your normal bra will feel like an object of torture. For bed I am currently wearing an Asda comfort bra which is simply a seamless/hook and wire free bra – almost like a crop top. Super comfy but with support. For daytime around the house I use a Bravado bra which is also really comfy and if I want a really nice shape but still non wired I use one that I bought in my last pregnancy from Mothercare. I do need more so your recommendations are appreciated.
2. Comfy knickers – normal underwear in a larger size doesn’t really cut it unless you want a fit around the belly with a saggy bum. I have maternity ones from h&m but my favourite ones are seamless black shorts from Primark – buy these in your normal size as they are super stretchy and are great for post birth too… Oh and very cheap.
3. Gaviscon/rennie/indigestions tablets – I use the cheap antacid tablets from Asda that are suitable for pregnant women. I keep a roll in my bedroom/kitchen and handbag. You will NEED these.
4. 4Head – hormone headaches are a bitch. I try to avoid painkillers as much as possible and 4head works really fast. The head massagers that look like this:
as also really helpful.
5. A pregnancy pillow. Last time I bought a cheapy pillow from eBay and it made no difference at all. This time I was offered a Theraline pillow to review and its made a huge difference to my nighttime comfort. I will be posting a review of this soon and can’t recommend it enough.
6. Good quality maternity clothes – I didn’t really do this last time and regret it. This time around I’ve had some great things to review from Blossom, Seraphine and Isabella Oliver and I’ve invested in some fab basics from ASOS and H&M. It makes you feel so much better about yourself.
7. Body lotion/oil – I’m not really a believer in the whole oil up and you won’t get stretch marks myth as I bathed in it last time and guess what? Stretch marks. But your skin does get tight and dry particularly on your belly so a nice lotion like Palmers cocoa butter or Bodyshop scented oil is handy.
8. Babycentre app or similar – I relied on this more in my first pregancy if I’m honest but I still like to check in occasionally and see what size/development the baby has had that week.
9. Netflix – this time around I have loved netflix. When you feel rubbish or can’t sleep it’s a great way to pass the time and there are lots of baby/pregnancy related films that you can watch like: Friends with kids or What to expect when expecting etc.
10. Lots of good food – some days you won’t want to eat much and having the food around that you love means you are more likely to have at least a nibble throughout the day.
11. Isotonic drinks – not ENERGY drinks. Isotonic drinks such as blue powerade help replace lost salts and really really help with nighttime cramps.
12. Flat, comfortable shoes.. Like Sanuks or Vans.
13. Twitter – support from other pregnant people/helpful advice from other parents. It all really helps.
Here are what the lovely people of Twitter suggested:
* Heartburn meds
* Pedicures
* Palmers pregnancy cream/body butter
* Exercise ball
* Bio Oil
* Maternity Pillows
* Long vests
* Massages
* Halloumi
* Nipple cream
What are/were your pregnancy essentials?
The Doctor will tell you what is good for you…
One of the things that nobody warns you about when becoming a parent is the amount of times your child will get ill. The amount of times you will hold a thermometer to their skin, hold a sick bowl or administer calpol at 3am. The amount of times you will question yourself about whether to call the Doctor/go the hospital or call NHS direct..the amount of times you will ask your partner “What do you think we should do?”
Being a parent is hard. I imagine as your child gets old it gets a little easier as they can tell you where it hurts and how much etc etc but when you have a toddler with a consistently high temperature but no visible signs of any other affliction- what do you do?
This week began with us laughing about our lazy daughter. She was asking earlier than normal to go to bed and having teenager like strops when being woken from her daytime nap. We laughed about it. Lazy girl.
Then on Monday night she felt hot! Really hot. Her temperature when I managed to get a reading after all her wriggling was a steady 39.3. I gave her calpol, it didn’t do much. We gave her ibuprofen and it reduced enough for us to think we didn’t need a Doc but not enough for any of us to sleep peacefully. She slept fitfully in a bath of sweat but the next morning she was a little brighter (still hot) her appetite didn’t return and she wasn’t her usual beaming self but we weren’t too worried-just teething surely? Yesterday was much of the same with a terrible nights sleep for all of us, fever again with an obviously unhappy girl and calpol/ibuprofen doses every 4 hours. We were all exhausted and slept until an unheard of 10am. Mad. When she woke she was sad, really sad. Whining and telling me she was crying, not wanting food and incredibly hot.
I gave in. I called the GP for advice. My Doctor listened to all I said and asked me lots of questions. He told me that he wasn’t overly concerned from what I’d said and that he would see her Thursday morning (24hrs later) I almost agreed but I looked at her peaky face and sad eyes somehow knowing she wasn’t right. He agreed to see her today – he wasn’t happy about it but I insisted.
At the surgery the first thing he did was take her temperature, then he took it again and then once more. It was 40.2. He didn’t quite believe it. He told me that we may have to take her to the hospital. After a (very ) thorough check he established that she had an ear and throat infection and was probably in a fairly huge amount of pain. Poor Izzy. I felt awful. I think he did too. I’m so glad I insisted but still feel guilty that I left her suffer for several days.
But how do you know when to make that call? How do you know it isn’t just teething or a fever which would break on its own?
When do you brave the wrath of the inquisitive doctors receptionist when you dare to ask for an appointment? Or the GP’s critical face when it really is nothing?
I would say if you feel that something isn’t right it probably isn’t. It’s better to check. Only you as a parent know your child. Even today when Izzy quite frankly looked hideous and ever so sad the GP told me he was astonished at a child looking so well with that high temp and infection but to me I knew – she wasn’t right. I don’t think I will do that again, leave it so long because I felt I was being over cautious.
How do you decide when to take that next step? Is it when they aren’t sleeping or sleep too much? Not eating/drinking or do you just know?
One thing I do have to say is the Cbeebies show Be Happy, be healthy and get well soon has made GP visits so much easier as Izzy gets excited saying Doctor Doctor and is very relaxed about being examined. Thank you Dr Ranj.
Retro recipes.. Rock buns
I’ve been making Rock Buns for a long time.. I can remember it being one of the first things I learnt to cook from my mums Bero book and now I more or less make them from memory with a few adaptations. It’s been a few years since I last did it but over the weekend my mum dropped some over that she had made and they were lovely and well I wanted more! It feels good to be baking again 🙂
As always it’s a fairly simple recipe but you can change it in lots of ways to make it your own.
The basic recipe can be found here and here is my version:
Zesty Dark Chocolate Rock Buns
225g Self Raising Flour
A pinch of salt
100g Butter ( I rarely use margarine when baking)
75g dark choc roughly chopped
Zest of 1 orange and 1 lemon
50g caster sugar
1 medium egg
1/2 tsp nutmeg
milk to mix (as needed)
Preheat oven and prepare two baking trays or be lazy like me and use 1 silicone cupcake tray and 1 baking tray 😉
Mix flour and salt and rub in your butter with fingertips.
Add your choc,zest, sugar and nutmeg and combine thoroughly. Add your beaten egg and as much milk as is needed to make a stiff dough. Place in heaps on baking tray or in cupcake cases/tray – depending on how you want them to look. Bake for approx 10-15 mins at gas mark 6. I made 12.
Eat warm sliced in half with butter or without or cold with a cuppa..or anytime really. They are divine.
Dear Bump
It’s been 161 days since I found out about you. 158 days since I told your Daddy on his birthday that our family was growing. 161 days of loving you, being scared of losing you and looking forward to meeting you. Approximately 25 hospital visits, 8 scans .. And counting. Numerous blood test and urine samples. Scary consultant meetings X2, hours spent in waiting rooms ..A LOT..Speculum tests-too many. Vigorous kicks and punches to my belly from your growing limbs..100’s, kisses to my growing belly from your proud sister – 10000. Cheerios placed in my belly button to feed the baby..7.
I spend so much time laying on a hospital bed listening to your precious heartbeat and you swimming about that I feel like I know you already. You hate the monitor on my stomach and protest wildly, the same goes for scans – you definitely make the hospital staff earn their wages.
Like your sister you already have a better wardrobe than I do. Mostly because you are having all of her hand me downs but you already own 3 pairs of Vans..how cool are you?
I want you to stay in my stomach, safe and warm for at least another 80 days – I want you to be strong and healthy when you are born and that is the safest time. 80 days seems like an unmanageable, amount of time right now but you are worth every second. That much I know.
I want to thank you for being such a little fighter. Taking everything my pregnancy has thrown at you and saying Pah I can handle that. You are such a big part of our family and we can’t wait to meet you.
Jamie Oliver’s Chicken and Leek Stroganoff – Ministry of Food
Time to share another of my favourite Ministry of Food recipes. Jamie Oliver’s Chicken and Leek Stroganoff. I’ve made this more times than I can count. It’s in the 20 minute meals section of the book and it really is quick, easy and incredibly good.
Chicken and Leek Stroganoff
You will need:
150g long-grain/basmati rice
1 Large Leek quartered lengthways & diced finely (washed well)
Large handful of chestnut or oyster mushrooms diced
2 Chicken Breasts diced
A glass of white wine
A small glass of water
A bunch of fresh parsley – finely chopped
285ml single cream
1 Lemon
Olive Oil
Sea Salt and freshly ground black pepper
a knob of butter
Start to cook your rice according to packet instructions.
Put a large frying pan/cazuela on a high heat and add a lug of olive oil and a knob of butter. Add your leek, wine and water and your salt/pepper. Cover with foil and bubble away for 5 minutes.
Remove your foil, add chicken, parsley, mushrooms and cream. Stir thoroughly and bring to the boil then immediately reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Drain your rice and dish out. Squeeze half a lemon into your stroganoff and season to taste. Serve atop your rice with a 1/4 of lemon and some parsley as a garnish.
Homemade Peanut Butter Cups.. The easy way.
It seems that posting my I miss cooking blog post last week inspired me to do some cooking. I haven’t gone overboard as I still have a serious lack of energy but I did make a huge batch of slow cooker bolognese last week followed by a lasagne ( using the bolognese sauce) an emergency batch of chocolate cupcakes on Saturday night at 10pm as I was craving cake and then yesterday I decided to make a recipe I’ve made quite a few times over the past two years so much so that I can’t remember where I found the original recipe and also I don’t think I even keep to it anymore as I found I made too many and they were too sweet on my first attempt so apologies if this recipe is adapted from yours!
This is an easy peasy recipe for peanut butter cups, if you love the Reeses version then these are a great substitute. You don’t get the two separate layers of chocolate/peanut butter but it still tastes awesome and well it’s simple! There are lots of far fancier recipes online if you want the real deal.
Peanut Butter Cups
You will need:
200g of good quality milk chocolate – I’ve used Cadburys dairy milk which was fab but yesterday I just used Aldi own brand (30p a bar) and that was pretty good too.
1/2 a cup of peanut butter ( smooth if you like the reeses texture) this time I used crunchy Skippy peanut butter which was delicious.
Using a Pyrex glass bowl over a saucepan of simmering water melt your chocolate slowly before adding your peanut butter and slowly melting/stirring to combine.
Once you have a gorgeous silky chocolatey peanut mixture feel free to taste (be careful) and add more peanut butter if needed.
Remove from heat and spoon into cupcake cases. This made about 8. Don’t overfill your cases as these are very rich and you will find it very hard to eat more than one in one sitting. Place in the freezer on a cupcake/muffin tray for 45 minutes then refrigerate in a sealed box for as long as they last.

Moooo.. A Discover Dairy Prize Draw
Have you ever visited a farm with your children? Do they know where milk comes from?
The British Nutrition Foundation recently found out that a third (29 %) of primary school children think that cheese comes from plants, and one in five (21%) had never visited a farm!
A separate 2013 study showed that less than half of 18-24 year olds knew it was possible to visit a farm, compared to eight out of ten over 65s – clearly showing that whilst the older generation are very familiar with country life, some younger people don’t have the same connection to where their food comes from.
DairyCo has created www.thisisdairyfarming.com, to help people understand a bit more about cows and where dairy products come from. Fronted by TV presenter Adam Henson, the site is packed full of fun films that show you where milk comes from, that cows have friends, and that you probably can’t keep a cow in your garden. They’ve also got a youtube moovie channel and you can keep up with all the moos on twitter @thisisdairy #Discoverdairy.
DairyCo is even giving you the opportunity to win £15 worth of shopping vouchers to spend on Great British Dairy produce! Simply answer this question for me…Do cows sleep standing up?*
Leave your answer in the comments.
*Clue.. It’s explained in the YouTube video below.
The Life of Cows:
This prize draw will run until Thursday 15th August 2013 at midday-a winner will be chosen at random and the prize sent directly from Discover Dairy.
Jamie Oliver Lasagne Recipe – Ministry Of Food
Today I am sharing with you my favourite Jamie Oliver lasagne recipe. I have LOTS of recipe books.. I mean lots and I love them, I read them as you would a normal book and sometimes it can take me a year to first try a recipe from a book but that doesn’t make it any less useful to me.
I had this for Christmas about 6 years ago and it’s been well used, so much so in fact that I was ever so slightly embarrassed showing it to Jamie Oliver to get signed at last years Big Festival. Splashes of tomato and olive oil along with post it notes on my favourite recipes but hey I’m sure he prefers them to be used.
Anyway the idea of the Ministry of Food book is that you learn a recipe and then pass it on, all of the meals are simple enough to make yet taste amazing. I have decided while I am having this temporary lull in creating my own recipes to share some of my favourites from the book with you as really that’s what it’s all about. If you are looking for a good basic recipe book to purchase I can’t recommend it enough.
To start here is my ultimate favourite recipe from this book, lasagne , there is something special about this lasagne. I’m not sure if its the combination of the two meats plus bacon or the creme fraiche and parmesan but it is seriously good.
Jamie’s lasagne
You will need:
2 rashers of streaky bacon diced
2 medium onions diced
2 cloves of garlic crushed
2 carrots diced
2 sticks of celery diced
olive oil
2 heaped teaspoons dried oregano
500g good quality minced beef or pork or half of each ( which is the best way )
2 tins of chopped tomatoes (400g)
sea salt & freshly ground black pepper
a small bunch of fresh basil
50g Parmesan cheese
To make the lasagne:
250g lasagne sheets -I’ve used fresh, homemade and dried all with great results
1 x 500ml tub of creme fraiche
100g Parmesan cheese
1 large tomato
Place a large saucepan on a medium heat and add 2tbsp of olive oil, diced bacon and oregano and cook stirring occasionally until bacon is golden brown. Add all of your diced veg to the pan an cook for around 7-8 mins stirring regularly, by now your veg should be starting to colour and soften. Add all of your minced meat and chopped tomatoes then add 1/2 a tin of water ( the book says 1 tin but I find it makes the sauce too thin and watery) add salt and pepper.
Remove the leaves from your bunch of basil and place in fridge for later, chop the stalks finely and add to sauce. Bring to boil then reduce heat, cover and simmer for 45 minutes.
Preheat oven to gas mark 5. Remove sauce from heat and add 50g of Parmesan as well as tearing in your large basil leaves keeping any smaller ones for decoration later.
If using dry lasagne sheets place some boiling after in a pan to blanch them for a minute or so before use, if using fresh there is no need. Make sure to drain afterwards to get rid of excess water.
Layering:
Start with a layer of bolognese the your lasagne sheets then a third of creme fraiche, seasoning and a third of Parmesan and repeat twice more. On the top layer decorate with sliced tomatoes and basil leaves before drizzling with olive oil.
Cover with foil and bake in oven for approx 20 minutes, remove foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes until golden brown and bubbling. Serve with salad and garlic bread. Sublime.
I’ve cooked and eaten a lot of different lasagnes and aside from an incredible one I had in Milan in 2008 which will probably never be beaten this is the best. Definitely one to try and worth the extra effort. I’ve made this for so many people and I’ve never had a bad reaction – in fact everyone asks for more.
More favourites coming soon including chicken and leek stroganoff and vanilla cheesecake.
