Where The Wild Things Will Be..Camp Bestival 2014

June 3, 2014 · by munchiesandmunchkins · Leave a Comment

I promised to share you with all the latest news and gossip from the team at Camp Bestival and what a lot of lovely news we have today.

20140602-222217-80537779.jpg

Starting with something which I find really exciting. How many hours of the week do your children spend in front of a screen of some kind? Be it at school, in the lounge or in their bedrooms….and it’s not just children. As a blogger I am all too comfortable spending my days looking at my iPad or smartphone and I will admit that some days I have to actively make myself take time away.

We went to a local beauty spot over the bank holiday for a day of BBQ’s and games with some friends and family. There was so signal on phones and we left everything else at home. It was a whole day of relaxing and just enjoying being outside. Lying on grass, being chewed on my various flying insects and throwing a frisbee at each other. It felt so peaceful. I remember days like that from my childhood and it worries me that my children are of the generation who won’t see as many days like that. It’s my job to make sure they do.

Anyway this is supposed to be about Camp Bestival (not my parenting) and so I will tell you about one of my favourite new features of this years fest.

Project Wild Thing

Team CB have teamed up with Project Wild Thing: a new and unique, people-powered movement to help children and adults reconnect with nature. Sounds good yes?

These are some of the things you and your children can participate in:

* Learning how to build a campfire
* Making Dens
* Rolling down hills
* Campfire cooking

And so much more. I am so excited about it all. More so by the fact that Izzy can be so much more involved this year.

I can’t wait to be a wild thing.

That’s not it though. Even more was announced today ..

The Travelling Barn

Ale and Hoe downs? You don’t need to ask me twice πŸ˜‰

Get your checked shirts and straw hats ready to join in with barn dancing squad Cut A Shine.

Caravanserai

Caravanserai is a convoy of English and French artists, gypsies and beatniks who have set up an encampment for weary travellers and wanderers to rest and recharge. You can enjoy delicious cocktails while completely chilling out during the day and party on during the night.

Pig’s Big Ball Room

Dedicated to the memory of John Peel and his Pig’s Big 78 selections, it’s programmed by the Shellac Collective and Greg’s Greats and is a mind-blowingly amazing dance arena.

It’s officially time to start counting down 59 days ago….

Look forward of seeing you all there.

Sunshine Stay At The Sands Resort – Review

June 2, 2014 · by munchiesandmunchkins · Leave a Comment

Last week I posted a photo diary of our stay at The Sands Resort in Newquay, Cornwall. Today I’m going to tell you a bit more about our stay.

This was our first holiday as a family of four. Quite surprising really as we normally holiday every few months even if it’s just a short stay but things have been a lot more chaotic with two than I imagined.

Anyway Chloe has just turned 6 months and we were well due a little break.

One thing I should point out is that going anywhere even just overnight with two little ones isn’t generally relaxing. You always need to be entertaining, changing or feeding at least one of them and you have to take so much stuff everywhere you go!

Luckily this is no general hotel. The Sands is totally geared towards making your holiday as stress free as possible. We didn’t take a buggy, preferring instead to hire ( for free) one of theirs. We didn’t take a travel cot for Izzy as there was a totally lovely wooden cot included in our suite. Towels were in our room as standard but also included are big towels for the pool so another thing we didn’t pack.

There is so much for us to do all the time that it wasn’t necessary to take loads of toys so for once packing up the car wasn’t such a chore.

On arrival – we parked up and the first thing Izzy spotted was the gorgeous pirate ship in the children playground, we spent a lot of time there.

20140602-160822.jpg

Checking in – was quick and painfree and here is where I will point out the ONLY flaw. There are no lifts. If we had taken the buggy and wanted to keep it in our room it would have been difficult to get it up two flights of stairs. This didn’t bother us too much as although we were quite a distance from the lobby our room was so gorgeous and the climb up the stairs was worth it for the view across the water as the sunset each evening. Bliss.

20140602-155514.jpg

Did I mention we had the most glorious weather every day we were there?

By the time we settled in that first day we had time for a quick dive in the pool before our evening meal. The pool was quiet and peaceful and we could relax in the smaller pool with the little ones.

After our swim and shower we had our three course evening meal in the hotel restaurant. Izzy was pretty stroppy after a long day of travelling up but the staff were attentive and set us at ease immediately. They were helpful but not in our faces which is just how I like it.

The food – was really good and I did like that the children’s choice had a starter included. Sometimes we are eating starters at restaurants and Izzy is sat waiting for her main which means she ends up eating most of mine!
Presentation and taste was spot on and there was plenty of it which meant we were all comfortable full and ready for our beds.

20140602-155156.jpg

20140602-155344.jpg

Our suite- was made up of one large sea facing room with a very large bed, settee, chairs, table and TV followed by a very small corridor/ alcove and then a smaller room with twin beds and a cot. This is ideal for families for small children such as us as it meant Izzy kept to her usual routine of sleeping in her own room but we were close if she got a bit unsure of where she was. We took our Bednest for Chloe and there was more than enough room for it next to our bed.

20140602-155111.jpg

Breakfast – this is a standard hot hotel buffet but with lots of different cereals/dried fruit etc too. Really nice yoghurt and a mountain of baby food to choose from. Coffees and teas are served to your table and I was happy to find they served decaf tea as SO many places don’t. Lots of clean high chairs ( I hate when they are grubby in some restaurants/hotels) and straws etc for drinks for the children.

20140602-155438.jpg

The Kids Club – included in our stay was one free entry for both girls in the ofsted approved kids club/ nursery. Prior to our visit I was extremely reluctant to leave my children with strangers but the women working there were incredibly lovely and great with both girls. We didn’t venture far with one of us sat around the corner reading the whole time and of course I popped back to feed C but the two hours of adult time was refreshing to say the least. There are several sessions you can choose thoughout the day including one from 7.15-9.30pm which would leave you to dine child free!

The Spa – part of our stay included a massage for me which was completely awesome. The Spa is set downstairs away from the children’s play areas and feels like you are in a different hotel. The room was so relaxing that I *may* have dozed off. There are lots of treatments available with competitive prices.. Handy if you forget to wax before your hols πŸ˜‰

The Gym – my OH used the gym during our stay and said it was pretty good everything he needed for a workout and clean and well maintained.

The Pools and Play areas – both indoor and outdoor pools are ideal for families, plenty of seating and again clean and obviously well looked after. The play area is fab with a mini golf area, sandpits and pirate ship as well as the usual things. There are also two bouncy castles which Izzy just loved.

20140602-155549.jpg

20140602-155559.jpg

20140602-155604.jpg

20140602-155613.jpg

Overall – I can’t recommend this hotel enough. It’s ideal for families, particularly young ones. We really felt like we needed a break prior to our visit and it was as relaxing as holiday with two very young children is ever going to get ..unless you take a nanny of course πŸ˜‰

We hope to return next year.

Visit The Sands website for lots of offers and more information.

* We were gifted a short break in The Sands Resort for the purpose of this review.

What A Dad Wants?

May 30, 2014 · by munchiesandmunchkins · Leave a Comment

It’s about now when you see adverts everywhere for aftershave or speciality razors for the men in your life, your Dad, your partner ( your children’s dad) your partners Dad. I mean I’m sure I’m not the only woman who buys a Father’s Day presents from her children to their dad, then a present for her own Dad and then another present for their partners Dad.

They don’t want ties and socks really do they?

For my Dad it’s pretty easy as I generally give him money and to my mum on Mother’s Day towards a holiday for them. As I’m part of such a large family it’s impossible to keep buying presents for my parents as they have everything! This year I’m giving Dad some euros towards his holiday to France in a few weeks. They will be away for Fathers Day and I will miss seeing him. I’ve always been really close to my Dad and I think I’m lucky.

For my OH I will choose him something I know he needs from Chloe and Izzy. In past years he has had waterproof pouches for his keys etc when he goes surfing, in car connectors to connect his iPhone to the stereo and other such things which he has liked. We normally get him some kind if novelty gift too and Izzy will make him a card. Last year we made him special biscuits and Izzy enjoyed making a huge mess. This year it’s his first year as a Dad of two so to make it a bit special we are going to the theatre to see Peppa Pig. Oops. I do feel a bit bad but it ads booked ages ago and I didn’t realise what day it was. Afterwards we will go for a nice meal and I will make sure he gets a lie in and brekkie in bed too. He does deserve it. He’s a great Dad and really supportive partner.

For my OH’s Dad we will look for something to do with food, such as a new cookery book or some special ingredients. He loves food and cooking so it’s quite fun for me to shop for him. We are off to the BBC Good Food show a few days before so that’s sorted πŸ˜‰

What do you get for your men?

We like to make our own cards as well as usually buying one. We were asked to write about Fathers Day by Dom and Geri who make really cool personalised cards I really like this one:

20140530-152551.jpg

Cute!

There is a really lovely range of Father’s Day card so definitely worth a visit to their site.

* this is a PR collaboration.

BBC Good Food Show Bloggers Day out at Brompton Cookery School

May 30, 2014 · by munchiesandmunchkins · Leave a Comment

Being a blogger certainly has perks. Especially when you are a food obsessed blogger like me. As a recently chosen BBC Good Food Show blogger I was invited to a day at Brompton Cookery School last week to meet up with the other bloggers, try some of the products which will be on sale at the show and learn some new skills from Marcus Bean.

We decided to stay there the night before rather than attempt a very early morning with a baby and toddler and I’m very glad we did as the B&B is pretty awesome. More to come on that as I do feel a full review is in order as I have so many pretty photos.

20140530-111827.jpg

The day started with a chat around the table with my fellow BBC GFS bloggers, Katy Truss, Marcus and Rob Swift ( who you will hear more about later) and some pretty delicious cordials from Morgans House. I loved the peppermint and lime – so refreshing. Katy and Marcus chatted a bit about what to expect from the day. Marcus then made everyone hungry by telling us what we would be eating for lunch then we went for a walk in the beautiful gardens for a lesson in herbs..plants and all things green.

20140530-111903.jpg

If I had a garden like his I doubt I would spend any time indoors.

We moved back inside and Rob Swift started his bread demo. We learned a lot in a relatively short space of time and he definitely has magic hands when it comes to dough.. And holding babies πŸ˜‰

20140530-112002.jpg

20140530-111937.jpg

We were then all given a bit of his magic dough and told to do our own thing. I love baking and creating things at home but I was a bit Arrrgghhh at the thought of doing it in front of everyone but it was really a lot of fun and whilst my bread doesn’t quite look as aesthetically pleasing as Robs it was still so tasty.. We had a car picnic on the way home!

20140530-112506.jpg

20140530-112514.jpg

Whilst our bread was baking, Marcus and the Good Food show team were busy making sure our lunch looked and tasted amazing.

20140530-112701.jpg

20140530-112715.jpg

20140530-112833.jpg

And it did. We had a great selection of products to try from some of the BBCGFS traders.. I loved The Garlic Farm chutneys and mayonnaise as well as the super succulent tomatoes and my pistachio meringue from Merangz from so good. We had beautiful ham, breads and the most incredible asparagus quiche with wild garlic pastry. Wow.

It was nice to meet some new Food Bloggers and to spend a day in a real cookery school, so much so that I’m going to plan a trip there again sometime in the near future and take some courses. As cookery schools go I imagine there aren’t many in such a picturesque setting and why not combine it with a stay in the B&B like I did. It was worth every penny.

Great news for my readers, if any of you do want to take cookery courses or buy them as gifts for friends/family you can get a lovely 10% off just by quoting “Munchies and Munchkins” when purchasing.

Foodies Festival Bristol 2014 – Ticket Giveaway and Discount Code

May 28, 2014 · by munchiesandmunchkins · 3 Comments

20140528-221044.jpg

Another great competition for you with FIVE pairs of tickets to giveaway and even a 2-4-1 code for those not lucky enough to win for The Foodies Festival which will be held in Bristols harbourside from 11th-13th July 2014.

I do spoil you.

Some info about Foodies Festivals:

Foodies Festivals began with a single event at an Edinburgh hotel venue in 2007 as part of the festivals season in August. This successful inaugural event attracted 5,000 people and in 2009 Foodies expanded to Brighton and Hampton Court, with Oxford added in 2010. In 2011 a further 3 locations were included at Tatton Park, Bristol and Battersea Park, London, bringing the total number of annual events to 8 in 2012, including the Christmas Foodies Festival in Edinburgh. 2013 saw the introduction of Clapham Common and the launch of a new Battersea Park event Foodies Feast – a unique eating and drinking experience including London’s most talked about restaurants. 2014 welcomes a partnership with English Heritage and two new Foodies Festivals at two of the most prestigious English Heritage properties: Kenwood House and Marble Hill. To date, over 600,000 food-lovers have visited the events, making Foodies the biggest food festival in the UK. Show sponsors include Jamie Magazine, Aga Rangemaster, AEG, Electrolux, Nyetimber, Nairns, Colgate, Palmolive, Wines of Germany and Wholefoods Markets.

I’m lucky enough to have been invited to review this festival and I’m really excited. It’s a new festival to me but it’s in its fourth consecutive year and tens of thousands of people attend each year.

Here is a quick list of some of the things I want to see/eat/take part in when I attend:

Chocolate, bake and preserves Theatre and Village

This needs no explanation really. Chocolate. Check. Cake. Check.

Chefs Theatre

I’m a big fan of watching cooking demos and there is an exciting line up which includes Glyn Purnell ( Great British Menu and Purnells) as well as Masterchef winner Mat Follas and finalists Larkin Cen and Andrew Kojima.

BBQ Arena

I love all things B-B-Qqqqqq from ribs to sauce and burgers. Yes. This is right up my alley.

And of course The Producers Market where I will inevitable walk away with far more goodies than I should buy but it’s research hey?

Tickets are reasonably priced:

1-day adult ticket Β£12.00 (Β£10.00 concession)
3-day adult ticket Β£18.00 (Β£15.00 concession)

Slow Cooker Mustard Shredded Chicken and Veg

May 28, 2014 · by munchiesandmunchkins · 6 Comments

I use my slow cooker a lot but typically for the same recipes over and over again like beef stew, spag bol and coq au vin.

I had a little think a few days ago about how really it can be used for at least 50% of the meals I cook and it frees up my hands and time for the little ones.

So this mustard chicken and veg came about. It’s more of a summery meal than a stew or casserole. I’ve made creamy mustard chicken on the hob before now and I was also inspired by a recipe for mustard chicken in the Jack Monroe book and so I kind of threw it all together and hoped for the best.

You will see that again I’m using tinned potatoes and carrots, I do this as its far better for my budget and also easier with preparation. I’ve used tinned potatoes for years now in dishes such as this – I do use fresh for some meals. I love that with the popularity of blogs like A Girl Called Jack more people are realising how much easier and of course cheaper they are.

It worked so well. We all cleared our plates including Izzy who I’m starting to realise loves dishes like this.

Mustard Chicken and Veg – Slow Cooker Style

20140321-220539.jpg

You will need:

3-4 chicken thighs ( you can use breasts but I prefer the flavour of thighs plus its cheaper)
400ml of chicken stock
A chunk of courgette chopped
1 tin of sliced carrots drained
1 tin of potatoes drained and chopped in half
1tbsp of flour ( I used cornflour but plain is fine)
A shake of mixed herbs -(I used a blend meant for pasta as I’d run out of fresh so it included basil/oregano)
A shake of parsley
1.5 tbsp of mustard -( I used mild French but wholegrain would be delicious)
150ml of double cream
Crushed sea salt and black pepper

20140321-220832.jpg

Brown your thighs

20140321-220937.jpg

Roll your thighs in the flour.

Add to the slow cooker along with all ingredients apart from cream. Turn your slow cooker on high for 5 hours.

20140321-221342.jpg

After 5 hours use a fork to shred your chicken in the pot and stir in your cream (add a little more flour if needed to thicken).

If watching the calories it would be fine with just 50ml of cream or even none at all – just not as good.

Serve with rice or just hunks of bread.

20140321-221525.jpg

This fed two hungry adults and one greedy toddler with leftovers. It’s also very purse friendly with the ingredients coming in at less than Β£4.

May Food Round Up

May 28, 2014 · by munchiesandmunchkins · Leave a Comment

As ever May has been a month of food.

I’ve received some lovely products to nibble and quench my thirst..

Metcalfes Skinny Topcorn

As part of the Topcorn tribe I receive a monthly box of delights through the post and this month I’ve needed it more than ever. With the start of my diet having some healthy snacks around is a huge bonus:

20140528-095635.jpg
Favourite this month was sweet n salt.

Santa Maria Mango Curry powder

This powder is recommended for use with fish or chicken so we used it to make a juicy, fruity chicken curry. It was really nice and a little bit different to the curries we usually make at home.

20140528-095555.jpg

V8 Fusion – Raspberry and Beetroot

I was surprised that we enjoyed this so much, I expected a more beetrooty earthy taste so I was happy when I tasted more of the raspberry flavour. I loved that each serving gives you one of your fruit portions AND one of your veg portions. We all throughout enjoyed.

20140528-100426.jpg

Black Garlic – The Garlic Farm

I was given a pot of Black Garlic to take home from a recent BBC Good Food Show Blogger meet and I’ve used it in EVERYTHING since then. I love the sweet almost caramel like garlic flavour.YUM.

20140528-101427.jpg

We have also been enjoying the Garlic Mayo and the Garlic Onion Chutney. Vampires beware around our house.

NU3 Goji Berries

When I was sent these my intention was to use them to create a fabulous flapjack recipe… Somehow I haven’t got around to it but instead we have been munching them atop porridge or mixed into cereal and they are so good. Plus they are a superfood don’t you know??

20140528-102444.jpg

* The above products were gifted.

Sunday Sunshine

May 25, 2014 · by munchiesandmunchkins · 2 Comments

This morning I read a blog post from Mummy Barrow it made me sit and ponder for a little while.

So much of my life as with everyone else I imagine is bemoaning all the things I don’t have. Moaning about the time that I don’t get to spend relaxing. About all the minor ailments which can aggravate my tired, hormonal body.

Today I tried to spend the day thinking of positives. It’s now 10.30pm and considering I’ve had what could be described as a rather crappy day with a very poorly baby I feel ok. Not bouncing around happy but ok. After all it’s been a bad day but I know tomorrow will more than likely be a bit better.

I’m not rich but I’m not living on the streets either.

I don’t have the job of my dreams but I’m not in the worst job I could be in.

Last year was a bit hard, a bit rubbish but it isn’t last year anymore. Does that make any sense?

I think of myself as being a nice person. I care about others. I give to charity ..and if someone I know is feeling low I try to make them feel better. I don’t do enough. Do any of us really do enough?

I should. We should. And I will.

Maybe I won’t change the world but maybe doing lots of little things will change my world.

Sometimes you just need a kick up the backside to make you think.

The D Word

May 24, 2014 · by munchiesandmunchkins · 3 Comments

This is a word I hate to utter but here it is. I’m on a diet. Not a silly diet or faddy diet but a straightforward eat less fat, eat more good stuff diet.

I’m not a fan of diets generally. I mean diets such as The Cabbage Soup or Atkins. I always think it’s better to just change the way you look at food and eat well and maybe do some kind of exercise jiggery thang.

I’ve been putting it off and putting it off.

But… I feel rubbish about the way I look right now. I know I’m not huge. Not at all. I know that I’ve had two babies in just over 2 years and it doesn’t disappear overnight but I do find it hard when I look at friends or family members who have babies and literally seem to snap back into shape. Yes breastfeeding helped my uterus shrink and to lose the initial pounds but just as it did with Izzy my body seems to want to hold on to the last stone or so until I finish. Yes this happens to about half of breastfeeding women..we don’t all lose every pound ( and more) when feeding.

I know this weight loss will be hard but I know that I will feel happier because of it. I’m not the type of person who will ever be stick thin and I’m ok with that. I like having some curves but I also like to feel comfortable in myself and for me that’s a stone or two lighter.

What I’m finding hardest is that I really want to bake. Baking soothes me. Cakes aren’t really that good for losing weight. I baked chocolate cupcakes with Izzy today and I somehow managed to exercise some restraint but woah it was hard.

Would dieting be easier if I didn’t love to cook so much? Maybe.

I’m going to increase my daily exercise level too although I don’t sit down for more than about 30 minutes on any given day so not sure how much more I can squeeze in but I’m certainly going to try the 30 day shred as it worked so well for me last time.

Above all I’m not going to put any pressure on myself. Weight loss/weight gain and the way we look at ourselves post baby is one of the hardest things to deal with as a woman and it can affect your emotional well being. I know what’s more important.

My wonderful daughters are certainly worth a wobbly belly.

20140524-204505.jpg

I just wanted to share that breastfeeding isn’t always this magical weight loss trick. Not for everyone.

How did you feel about your weight 6 months post partum? Did breastfeeding zap your pounds away?
