I first saw this recipe on one of Jamie Oliver’s Christmas cookery shows a few years ago. The Jamie Oliver Epic Hot Chocolate Mix. I decided to give it a whirl and was so impressed I swore to make it up into jars for gifts for friends and family. I didn’t end up doing it until last Christmas when I made small jars to place in my Christmas hampers and everyone loved it.
I’ve made this on the stovetop and it’s a thick gooey indulgent cross between a hot chocolate and a chocolate dip.
Anyway without further waffling ( Oh did I mention it is really good served with waffles? ) I promised to share the recipe so here we go:
Jamie Oliver Epic Hot Choc
You will need:
2 tablespoons Horlicks/malted milk powder
2 tablespoons cornflour
3 tablespoons icing sugar
4 tablespoons quality organic cocoa
100 g good-quality dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids), finely grated – Chill your chocolate first to make it easier to grate
1 pinch ground cinnamon
1 pinch sea salt
*Ingredients can be multiplied depending on how big your jars and how generous you feel.
Combine all ingredients and place into a small jar. Tie a piece of pretty ribbon around the rim and give to someone you love.
Here is the method to making the hot choc:
To make two pints, place 2 pints of semi skimmed (or full fat for ultimate indulgence) milk in a saucepan and bring almost to the boil before adding 10 tbsp of your mix, whisk in quickly and leave to bubble for a few min before serving. Your mixture should be thick and luxurious.
*Write the instructions on a small piece of brown card and attach to your jars.
You could serve with toasted marshmallows or waffles/churros to dip in 😀

I have made this when I saw Jamie’s TV program it’s divine….BUT could any one work out how much would you make up for one cup…..HELP I LOVE THE STUFF, but don’t want to make up so much..

Half a pint of milk, 2.5 spoons of the mix, that should be enough for 2 cups of the hot chocolate, so if you put 2.5 spoons of the mix on the scales and then just half the weighed amount and use a quarter pint of milk you should have enough for one decent sized mug! I’ll be making some of this mix tonight and having some with my son! Looks totally Devine but not something I could have too often or my weight line will hate me lol hope that helps chrissy

Half a pint is approx 1 cup or 250 ml.
2 pints is 4 cups or 1 ltr.
So use 1/4 of the mix for 1 cup

Hi! Can you tell us more about what size jars you used and how much mixture filled them? It would be a great gift but I am so not good with working stuff like this out! Great reading, thank you

Hmmm I can’t remember exactly BUT I’m trying to make a big batch up again next week so I will note them down and edit this post. Hope that helps.

I love this recipe but find that most people (especially those in my office at work whom I want to give this to), like to add hot choc to water. This recipe is fairly naff in hot water. Has anyone tried adding skimmed milk powder or some other ingredient? If so, what quantity works for a big batch like this?

you can add milk powder to the dry mix usually 2 tsp per serve however that does depend on the make and brand of the powder. and you may need to reduce the corn flour component.
experiment who Knows it may become your own family recipe and when you hand it down to you children & grandchildren you will be remembered with each sip forever

Actually this recipe pre dates Jamie, by a millennia !
You can add a few drops of mint essence to the mix for a choc mint taste , or for a Jaffa taste a few drops of orange & vanilla and for Turkish delight rose essence or water etc etc.
This recipe was very common among the hill regions of Italy / Switzerland in the 1920’s-60’s and was dutifully handed down from Nona’s to grand daughters and each family had their own variant which they considered vastly better than any other LOL
However it did appear to die out with the onset of pre packaged choc in the 1970’s so well done Jamie for reviving an old classic

Hi – how long will it keep for in a jar if i make this up for presents ? thanks in advance
Sassy says
As long as the mix is kept in an air tight container, it will last months and likely a year or more. But seriously, this stuff is yummy, I doubt that the recipients will have a problem polishing it off. If you are really worried, you could use little jars with just enough mix for 2 cups worth of mix, pop a little bag of mini marshmallows or peppermint candy to top the jar up, tie a ribbon around the jar, pop the jar in a new cup/mug, add a candy cane and you’re set to go. They will use that up quite quickly and still have the mug long after. 🙂 Happy Holidays!

How would you do this without the Horlick? I. Ant stand malted things!
munchiesandmunchkins says
Hmm Horlick is pretty crucial to this I th8nk, it definitely adds something but also it doesn’t taste like Horlicks if that makes any sense?
