To Soothe or Not To Soothe? The Dummy Debate

March 16, 2014 · by munchiesandmunchkins · Leave a Comment

Before my first daughter was born I remember thinking write clearly that I didn’t want to use dummies..soothers.. pacifiers – whatever you choose to call them. I hated seeing children of 3-4years old walking around dummy firmly stuck in their mouths, talking through them and finding it hard to understand what they were saying.

When Izzy was about 4weeks old I was tired, she fed all the time and at night it was becoming clear that she was only feeding so often out of comfort so we bought some dummies and it helped massively. I didn’t put a dummy in her mouth every time in the day that she made a noise and I made sure that if she was hungry she was fed rather than pacified. However when she was unsettled at night or if we needed that extra few minutes to get somewhere to sit down for a feed it helped so much. So much.

From 6 months we only used the dummy for sleep. We would give her a dummy and a snugly toy/blanket at nap time and nighttime and it became a sleep cue. We never used it again in the day time apart from on an odd occasion when she was very unwell.

I am firmly in the pro dummy club.

But I still had the occasional bout of guilt for using dummies but why?

Why did I feel guilty for soothing my child? For helping her sleep?

I felt less guilty when I realised that most of the people I knew that didn’t use dummies didn’t do so out of choice but because their baby refused to take them. Because not all babies do.

I was invited recently to the launch of a new soother (dummy) range by Tommee Tippee at The Baby Show in London which is what made me think of writing this post.

Cute new designs:

They have developed a new line of soothers which come in 4 ranges – Fun, Anytime, Night time and Air they have a large, long, flat teat which is easier to hold in babies mouth and in their tests the new soother was accepted first time by more babies.

This is a plus in my book – this time around we were prepared and had them ready when Chloe was 4weeks old ( most HV’s recommend establishing breastfeeding first which is why we waited until 4wks) and luckily for us she has taken to them. Again she doesn’t have it all the time and its mostly just for settling her when upset or over tired.

It has really helped with her sleep, she still feeds on demand when she’s hungry and is gaining weight well and she uses her dummy when she just needs to be settled.

Some research has shown that using dummies for bedtime can reduce the risk of SIDS ( sudden infant death syndrome) whilst more research is still needed on this it’s certainly worth thinking about. You can find more info on the Lullaby Trust Website

What’s your view on dummies? Do you agree with me that that using them or not using them is an individual choice and neither choice is wrong.

The Baby Show 2014

February 22, 2014 · by munchiesandmunchkins · Leave a Comment

Whoever knew you ‘needed’ so many things for your baby?

Visiting the Baby Show as a pregnant or a new mum is like visiting a food festival when you are a very hungry foodie. You want everything. You may not need everything but the want is certainly there.

It’s filled with every major parenting brand you can think of such as: Tommee Tippee, Mothercare, The Gro Company and Cosatto to name a few as well as some really cool newer brands such as Bednest ( a personal favourite) and Ewan the Dream Sheep.

I only had 3 hours to spend at the show due to travel times etc and really you need a bit longer than that to see everything but I still came away with a long list of things I want – I couldn’t buy everything as I had to get back on the train.

The facilities at the show are fabulous with changing areas provided by Asda – so no need to take hoardes of nappies and wipes as its all provided and a brilliant breastfeeding area with nursing chairs for those with hungry little ones and high chairs/spoons/food for those with older babies all provided by Tommee Tippee and Plum Baby.

Stands I visited and loved:

*The Gro company and Bednest (stand E20)

Both of these brands are brands I use daily and love. We used Gro Swaddles for Izzy and now use for Chloe and its amazing how much they both slept better using them. I’ve also got Gro Clock which we are staring to use this week and will be changing my bedroom light to a Gro Light soon for easier breastfeeding at night.

Bednest is a brand I wish I’d known about with Izzy as Chloe loves hers and it makes life so much easier for me as a breastfeeding mum. It’s a small cot which attaches to the side of your bed enabling you to co sleep without having baby in your bed. Brilliant.

* Tommee Tippee (stand L60)

We love TT products and use lots of them including a baby monitor, soothers and steriliser. Lots of brilliant new baby and weaning products at the show and also amazing breast pads. They have a new range of soothers which launched yesterday and are pretty fabulous so definitely check them out.

* Funky Giraffe (stand C30)

Another brand we already use and love. Gorgeous bandana bibs, accessories and some really cute dresses on show yesterday all at really reasonable prices. I do love a bargain.

* LoveKeepCreate (stand D35)

I haven’t used this brand yet but hope to in the future. They make beautiful keepsakes from your old baby clothes. They had great discounts available if you booked at the show.

*Snugglebundl (stand C33)

The amazing baby lifting blanket you may have seen on Dragons Den – really useful product and lovely people on the stand also.

* Slumber – Roo (stand E9)

A brilliant stand to visit where you can buy brands such as Boba, Scootababy and Moby. The staff will show you how to use them and I warn you, you will want to buy it all.

There was lots more that I loved and I may add to this list when I am a bit more awake!

Definitely worth a trip to The Baby Show – runs until February 23rd at The Excel in London and at various locations later on in the year.

* I was provided with a press pass to review the show.

The Ultimate Baby Monitor- A Review

September 18, 2013 · by munchiesandmunchkins · 2 Comments

A few months ago we were offered the chance to review the all singing all dancing video and sensor monitor from Tommee Tippee. We had been using a TT monitor with Iz since birth so I immediately said yes.

20130918-120925.jpg

The monitor we previously used was the suresound sensor pad monitor – we were given it by my brother and sis in law and it was fabulous. As new parents bringing home a newborn it was scary. Being able to glance over and see the reassuring flashing light and know that my baby was moving/breathing made me a lot less worried.

The new monitor is even better.

Features :

*Infrared night vision camera
*Movement sensor pad
*Adjustable sensitivity settings
*3” colour screen
*Baby’s room temperature display
*Up to 300m range with out-of-range indicator
*Two-way talk back
*Pager to find missing parent unit
*Baby night light controllable from parent unit
*Channel auto-select

The parent monitor can be charged up so you can just carry it around with you unplugged so when you want a relaxing bath it’s ideal. With the video screen it’s really handy to keep an eye on Iz especially when she is banging about so I can check she isn’t trying to escape her cot! We use the talkback feature to tell her to lie down etc which she mostly listens to and also to wake her gently from her nap rather than just walking into her room. It’s also really good fun to listen to her nighttime babbles and her morning chats with Makka Pakka.

You can even remotely switch on the nightlight which is a feature we have recently used when Izzy started getting scared at night.

We still use the sensor pad option for Izzy as she is still in a cot and I still find it reassuring, particularly when she’s unwell as she can have problems with wheezy breathing which can be frightening.

All in all its a really fabulous product. We don’t get any false alarms with the sensor pad which happened occasionally with the older model and the soppy parent in me has really enjoyed these few months of watching my little girl sleep. It is an expensive product retailing for around £150 but its definitely worth the extra pennies.

* Disclaimer – I was provided with this product free of charge in exchange for a review. All views are my own. Images from the Tommee Tippee site.
